Programs

In order for community members to develop new institutional systems and patterns of community life, a vast expanse of knowledge is needed at the grassroots. The kind of knowledge that is required will need to be integrated from various disciplines in order to effectively develop the diverse patterns of social and economic activity that we hope will characterize the future of our neighborhood. The capacities developed by programs of Striving for Community Progress and Education aspire to equip a new generation of youth and community members to read social reality and develop meaningful processes and initiatives of social action. This growing cadre of human resources will need to be able to analyze the social forces at work in society with a coherent conceptual framework and generate new ways of thinking about social change in light of relevant scientific and spiritual knowledge.

Academic Tutoring

One area of interest for SCOPE is how to enable young people to develop a love for learning and habits of thought conducive to sound academic achievement. Some of the instruments employed by the tutorial space are daily academic tutoring, camps, and intensive courses that complement and reinforce young people’s formal schooling and community involvement.

Internship Program

The internship program supports youth in the Triangle area to become promoters of community well-being by navigating questions of how to live coherent lives characterized by the pursuit of spiritual and intellectual excellence and service to their local communities. The internship program has four components: academic tutoring, mentorship, scholarship, and study.

Trades Training

The trades training program focuses on helping youth develop practical skills in the trades through apprenticeships and skills workshops. Interns interested in the trades  have an apprenticeship as part of their internship.
