Striving for Community Progress and Education

Developing capacity to apply spiritual and scientific knowledge to the progress of our communities.

Striving for Community Progress and Education (SCOPE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the generation, application and diffusion of knowledge for the betterment of society. We work with youth, families and communities in neighborhoods across North Carolina to identify obstacles to community progress and to develop the capacities required to address them. Our programs seek to enhance the capability of individuals and communities to contribute to meaningful social change that takes into account the spiritual and material dimension of human affairs.

Youth Development & Achieving Coherence

Rising generations play a significant role in contributing to the advancement of their communities and society at large. The way young people understand themselves, their capacities, and their place and role in the world therefore has significant social consequences. Our communities need a growing body of young people who can contribute to the material and spiritual progress of our neighborhoods, both through professions and voluntary engagement with civil society. Striving for Community Progress and Education is focused on learning to assist youth who are already engaged in intensive processes of community building to achieve conceptual and practical coherence between the demands of their service and various other facets of life such as their education, work, family life, and media engagement. The capacities developed by SCOPE programs aspire to equip a new generation of youth to read social reality and develop meaningful processes and initiatives of social action. This growing cadre of human resources will need to be able to analyze the social forces at work in society with a coherent conceptual framework and generate new ways of thinking about social change in light of relevant scientific and spiritual knowledge.

Academic Tutoring

In order to address the number of middle schoolers in the Triangle area who are not reading at grade level, the Academic Tutoring Program addresses literacy among 11-14 year olds. In addition to language capabilities and reading comprehension, the academic tutoring also offers tutoring in mathematics.

Internships

The internship program supports youth in the Triangle area to become promoters of community well-being by navigating questions of how to live coherent lives characterized by the pursuit of spiritual and intellectual excellence and service to their local communities. The internship program has four components: academic tutoring, mentorship, scholarship, and study.

Trades Training

The trades training program focuses on helping youth develop practical skills in the trades through apprenticeships and skills workshops. Interns interested in the trades have an apprenticeship as part of their internship.
